Professor Subodh Dave, RCPsych Dean

Dean Subodh DaveSubodh was elected as Dean in 2021. He holds this role until 2026. He has overall responsibility for setting standards for and facilitating the effective delivery of psychiatric education and training.

Subodh is an international medical graduate having done his MD and DNB (Psychiatry) from Grant Medical College, Mumbai, India. He moved to the UK in 1995 and obtained his CCT in General Adult Psychiatry with an endorsement in Liaison Psychiatry.

He works as Consultant Liaison Psychiatrist in Derbyshire Healthcare Foundation Trust and is Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Bolton. He is Deputy Director of Undergraduate Medical Education and in that role has led innovations in introducing and embedding simulation and lived-experience involvement in the training of medical students at the University of Nottingham.

Subodh has held training roles at all levels spanning undergraduate, foundation and postgraduate training both in the UK and internationally.

He is passionate about ensuring that training, assessment structures and CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programmes lead to improvements in patient care and clinical outcomes. To that effect, his key priorities are laid out in the annual Dean's update.

Professor David Baldwin, Professor of Psychiatry, University of Southampton

David-BaldwinDavid Baldwin is Professor of Psychiatry and Section Head of Clinical Neuroscience in the School of Clinical and Experimental Sciences Academic Unit of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Southampton. He trained in medicine at Charing Cross Hospital Medical School, in psychiatry at St Mary's Hospital Medical School and the Maudsley Hospital, and in medical humanities at Birkbeck College.

He is an Honorary Professor in the University of Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health in Cape Town, South Africa.

David is President of the British Association for Psychopharmacology, a Councillor of the European College of Neuropsychopharmacology, a Past President of Depression Alliance, a Medical Patron of Anxiety UK, Editor-in-Chief of Human Psychopharmacology, and author of around 500 full articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals.

Dr Richard Braithwaite, Consultant Psychiatrist, RCPsych Chair of ECT and Related Treatments Committee

Richard BraithwaiteDr Richard Braithwaite completed dual training in General Adult and Old Age Psychiatry in the UK in 2010. He has since been employed as a Consultant Old Age Psychiatrist, first by Isle of Wight NHS Trust, during which he served as Clinical Tutor and as Lead Clinician, and currently by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust, in the south of England. He gained an interest in electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) at medical school, taking an active part in delivery of ECT during basic and higher psychiatric training.

Alongside his work with patients and families affected by dementia, he is currently the Lead Consultant for Neuromodulation in Sussex, performing clinical sessions in repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), as well as ECT.He has chaired the Royal College's Special Committee for ECT and Related Treatments since September 2022, contributing to its work in key areas related to ECT practice and that of other physical treatments in psychiatry. Previously, he had served as Committee Vice Chair for four years. He has also served four years on the College Centre for Quality Improvement's ECT Accreditation Service (ECTAS) Advisory Group, helping shape national quality standards.

He has long endeavoured to enhance the delivery of treatments in psychiatry for which a strong evidence base exists, whilst challenging the allocation of finite resources to those for which it does not. He questions the gradual extension of the borders of mental disorder into the realms of normal diversity, whilst upholding the rights of people with major mental illness to receive appropriate medical treatment and holistic support.

Dr Jo Rodda, Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry and Curriculum Lead for Mental Health, Kent and Medway Medical School

Dr Rodda is a consultant psychiatrist and has been involved in teaching and research throughout her career. She began work at KMMS in September 2020 and is currently divides her working week between the medical school and her role as a consultant psychiatrist and researcher in Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (KMPT).

Our speakers have advised the following learning objectives:

  • to appreciate the breadth of ECT-related research
  • to gain a basic understanding of key developments in the field
  • to apply these to clinical practice
  • to gain increased familiarity with evidence base for current treatments: increased confidence in prescribing; increased awareness of potential novel treatment approaches.
  • to review approaches to teaching in the psychiatry undergraduate curriculum
  • to describe a bespoke psychiatry engagement programme for medical students and trainees.
