Opportunities for medical students

The College offers a range of benefits for medical students to support them in their career development and to Choose Psychiatry. These benefits include our bursaries and fellowships.

The Psych Star scheme is open to UK medical students who are also registered Student Associate members of the College. Being a Psych Star provides students with a community of like-minded peers to support them as well as a mentor with professional experience of the student’s interests and a host of other benefits including a trip to International Congress.

Applications to become a Psych Star are currently open and will close on 21 April.

The Aggrey Burke Fellowship for Black medical students grew from actions within the College’s Equality Action Plan. The fellowship was introduced to help address the fact that Black—especially Black Caribbean doctors—are the least-represented ethnic group in psychiatry.  Fellows are matched with a mentor who will support them for the two years of their fellowship. They are also offered a CPD fund to help them develop their own career interests, and many other benefits.

The current cohort of fellows will conclude their fellowships in August. They have achieved a great deal over the last two years and are continuing with their joint research projects.

We are delighted to be able to recruit a second cohort of Fellows to commence their fellowships in September 2025. Applications will open shortly, with full information about how to apply on our website. Please share information about this fellowship with students and if you have any questions or comments, email us.
