Regional Advisors and Specialty Representatives

About Regional Advisors and Regional Specialty Representatives

Regional Advisors, Regional Specialty Representatives and their deputies are senior College positions. They represent the College on all matters relating to postgraduate education, professional development and the review and approval of appropriate job descriptions in psychiatric posts.

Lists of vacancies for these positions are kept up to date on our Divisions section.

Holders of these positions have a vital role in carrying out College functions, and divisions are always interested in hearing from qualified members who’d like to get more involved in College policy.

Members holding these positions are also expected to become College Assessors, representing the College on AAC consultant interview panels, providing a crucial link to the workforce intelligence held by the College.

 

Training and induction

We provide induction and training for all new and existing Regional Advisors, Regional Specialty Representatives and deputies.

This training is provided annually in our main building in London.

Job descriptions in Scotland differ from those in England and Wales, reflecting the different nature of the role, especially around the approval of NHS job descriptions.


Approval process for psychiatrist job descriptions

There is a process agreed by all the divisions in England, Wales and Northern Ireland for reviewing and approving consultant and specialty doctor job descriptions.
We also provide a 'exemplar' consultant job description for use by trusts developing their own JDs for approval.

Using our exemplar JD will make the approval process for specific JDs quicker and more efficient.

Apply to be a Regional or Deputy Regional Advisor

The process of replacing an existing appointed member of the Executive Committee starts around three months before the current person leaves.

The Manager of the Executive Committee where the post exists is responsible for advertising the vacancy openly and transparently to the wider membership.

The Executive Committee where the post exists is responsible for interviewing all applicants and deciding which applicant is most suitable for the post.

 

The application

You’ll need to provide by email:

  • An up-to-date CV
  • The names and contact details of two referees. The referees must be Fellows or Members of the College, but not a member of the interview panel
  • A brief note in support of your application is acceptable but not essential.

As well as suitability for the post, you’ll need to prove you:

  • Are registered with the GMC
  • Receive annual appraisals in your main place of work
  • Are up to date with your membership fees
  • Meet the College’s CPD requirements
  • Have discussed the role with your employer (usually your Medical Director) and that they’re happy to allow you the time needed to carry out the role effectively and efficiently
  • Are able to fulfil the requirements of the post.

 

The interview

Anyone who applies and fulfils the criteria for the post will be interviewed (with the exception of Regional Specialty Representatives).

The interview panel will normally be no more than three people:

  • The Chair of the Executive Committee
  • A member of the Executive Committee
  • The Division or the Committee Manager.

The Executive Committee Member will be either an elected or an appointed member and, when possible, should be the outgoing post holder.

Before the interviews you will be given a timetable, details of the panel, directions to the venue and a claim form.

The interview won’t be longer than 30 minutes and everyone will be told when a decision will be likely.

Whether you’re successful or not you’ll be told of the outcome within two days of the interview.

The Chair of the Executive Committee will provide feedback to anyone who asks for it.

Apply to be a Regional or Deputy Specialist Representative

The process of replacing an existing Regional Specialty Representative or Deputy Regional Specialty Representative starts around three months before the current person leaves.

Deputy Regional Specialty Representative’s wanting to apply for a vacant Regional Specialty Representative role would still need to go through the normal application process.

Divisions are responsible for advertising the vacancy openly and transparently to all consultants in that specialty in the relevant Region.

Divisions and Faculties are jointly responsible for deciding the applicant(s) most suitable for the post.

Regional Specialty Representatives and Deputy Regional Specialty Representatives are directly accountable to the Regional Advisor of the region they are appointed to and thereafter to the Registrar.

 

The application

You’ll need to provide:

  • An up-to-date CV
  • The names and contact details of two referees. The referees must be Fellows, Members or Specialist Associates of the College, but can’t hold office on the Education and Training Committee
  • A brief note from in support of your application is acceptable isn’t essential.

 

The selection

All applications are referred to the Regional Advisor and Deputy Regional Advisor.

 

What happens if there’s only one application?

If there’s only one applicant and they’re suitable, the Regional Advisor refers the application to the Division Executive Committee for consultation.

If Division approval is received the Regional Advisor will write to the Chair of Faculty/Section with a recommendation.

The Faculty/Section Chair will then consult with the Faculty/Section Executive.

If the Faculty/Section gives their approval the Division Manager will then refer the application to Education and Training Committee for ratification.

 

What happens if there are two or more applications?

If there’s more than one person applying the Division Manager (on behalf of the Regional Advisor) will send all of them to the specialty community in the region to get advice on the most suitable one.

It’ll be the responsibility of the specialty community to decide which person they think is best for the post.

If two people are suitable then the Regional Advisor may suggest to the specialty community that one is chosen as substantive and one as deputy.

In some of the heavier weighted sub-specialties it may be suggested that two members be appointed to share the work load.

After the decision on which applicant(s) would be suitable. The Regional Advisor refers the application(s) to the Division Executive Committee for consultation.

If Division approval is received the Regional Advisor will write to the Chair of Faculty/Section with a recommendation.

If two people are chosen, then the Regional Advisor needs to make clear who’ll be substantive, and who’ll be the deputy, or if the post will be equally shared.

The Faculty/Section Chair will then get advice from the Faculty/Section Executive.
If they agree with the recommendation, the Faculty Manager will then tell the Division Manager.

The Division Manager will then send the Education and Training Committee the following information to get ratification:

  • Members’ name
  • Membership number
  • Specialty
  • Region
  • Name of proposer (Chair of Division or Regional Advisor)
  • Name of seconder (Chair of Faculty/Section).

The Education and Training Committee Manager is responsible for telling the Faculty and Division Managers when the post has been formally ratified.

The Division is responsible for letting applicant(s) know the outcome of the selection process and for speaking with applicant(s) regarding substantive and deputy posts.

Successful applicants may start in the role immediately following notification of Faculty/Section support.

The Division is responsible for making sure that the selected applicant(s) receive a welcome pack before they start in post.
