Dr Hankir wins award

Dr Ahmed Hankir was named Caroline Flack Mental Health Hero at The Sun newspaper’s Who Cares Wins Health Awards.

Celebrity father and son Martin and Roman Kemp presented Dr Hankir with the award, along with Davina McCall, with a special dedication from Formula One superstar Sir Lewis Hamilton, at the event at the end of November.

The Sun’s Who Cares Wins awards, in partnership with NHS Charities Together, honours people across the health and social care sector who go above and beyond for their patients or causes, and Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and Leader of the Opposition Sir Keir Starmer were both there to see Dr Hankir receive the award.

Dr Ahmed – known as The Wounded Healer to his nearly 70,000 Twitter followers – is Public Engagement and Education Lead at the World Health Organization Collaborating Centre for Mental Health, Disabilities and Human Rights as well as an NHS psychiatrist at the Maudsley Hospital.

Receiving the award he said:

“Things can change with the right support. Because if I can change and realise my dreams, other people out there living with mental health conditions can recover and realise their dreams too.”

RCPsych President Dr Adrian James said:

“This is a tremendous accolade for Dr Hankir who is a great ambassador for psychiatry and a powerful advocate for reducing stigma. His story is quite extraordinary.”
