Important update on the RCPsych in Scotland position regarding the Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill
Thank you for your ongoing engagement on this significant issue, and in particular to those who responded to our recent call for views on the proposed removal of professional safeguards from the Bill.
Drawing on your feedback, the matter was considered and voted on at the Scottish Devolved Council meeting on 26 February.
The Council agreed that, should Section 18 of the Bill - containing essential conscientious objection provisions for our members, as well as broader employment protections - be removed at Stage 3, the College would be compelled to adopt a position of opposition to the Bill.
On 12 March, the Scottish Parliament voted to remove Section 18 in full.
As a result, our position has now changed, as outlined in our statement of opposition.
