Dr Julie Anderson

Vice President, College and Chair, RCPsych in Northern Ireland

Dr Julie Anderson has been a Consultant Perinatal Psychiatrist in Northern Health and Social Care Trust since 2022. Prior to that, she was a Consultant Psychiatrist in a Community Mental Health Team in the same trust since 2013.

Julie has had an interest in Perinatal Psychiatry since the beginning of her training in 2003. She was a lead voice in the campaign for funding for specialist perinatal services in NI. She is a member of the Perinatal Committee and the Devolved Council in RCPsych NI. Until 2024, she was a member of the College Perinatal Faculty as the NI rep and the Chair of the Regional Reps. She has been an assessor for MBRRACE until 2024.

She has an interest in education and training and completed a Masters in Clinical Education in 2012. Since 2017 has been the Undergraduate Lead for Psychiatry at Queen’s University Belfast. She was a previous Training Programme Director for General Adult Psychiatry in the Northern Ireland Medical and Dental Training Agency for 5 years. In 2022 she joined the Professional Support and Wellbeing department in NIMDTA, supporting trainees across all specialities. Julie is also a CASC examiner for the College.

Julie’s priorities as RCPsych NI Chair are:  

  • increase psychiatry workforce  
  • implementation and funding of the 10-year Mental Health Strategy for NI (2021-31)
  • further improve engagement of members in RCPsych NI.

Julie enjoys walking for at least 10k steps every day. She loves time with her family, including her almost grown up children and now quite elderly dogs. Her church connections are also hugely important to her.
