Core Values for Psychiatrists
Additionally, We have developed a set of Core Values for Psychiatrists. The
Values Framework should contribute to shaping clinical practice, policy, and planning in mental health care. It covers patients of all age ranges and specialties within psychiatry.
It can be used as a training tool, a reference point and a measuring tool for evaluating practice. It underpins the therapeutic relationship between the patient and the doctor, which in turn influences the quality of recovery.
‘Unlike ethics, which seeks to determine ‘right outcomes’, the values-based practice relies on ‘good process’, in particular, good clinical skills, as the basis of balanced decision-making where values conflict.’ (Fulford, 2011)
The Core Values are open to future revision and they can operate alongside the Royal College of Psychiatrists Code of Ethics in clinical practice.
They have been developed by RCPsych Wales led by Professor Keith Lloyd, Consultant Psychiatrist, Swansea Bay University Health Board and Ms Veryan Richards, Patient Representative, RCPsych Wales and in consultation with the Executive Committee and Welsh membership.
