Guidance for CESR Fellowships

Guidance for rotational schemes with support for the Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) in Psychiatry

The College became aware of an increasing number of posts for SAS doctors with specific support towards obtaining a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR) applications in psychiatry and noted large variations in the way the schemes were run in individual trusts.

In response to this, Professor Nandini Chakraborty has written a comprehensive guide for best practice within these fellowships. This guide is aimed at NHS Trusts to ensure each fellow is provided with adequate support and accurate guidance for their CESR application.

The guidance covers recommendations for the following areas:

  • target doctors for CESR programmes
  • the process of appointment
  • duration and content of the programme
  • supervision
  • ongoing evaluation and assessment
  • a suggested audit tool for CESR fellowships

We believe the document should be useful for Trusts who are intending on setting up Psychiatry CESR fellowships and also for potential or existing doctors on those fellowships.
