Members can contribute to the Aggrey Burke Fellowship Fund

Dr Aggrey Burke, the first Black consultant psychiatrist to work in the NHS and a trailblazing giant in psychiatry, died shortly before Christmas, aged 82.

Aggrey’s family have let the College know that members who wish to may – instead of flowers – make a contribution to the Aggrey Burke Fellowship Fund.

By helping break down barriers during his career, Dr Burke inspired generations of medical students. He cared deeply about the Aggrey Burke Fellowship that the College established in his honour, to encourage Black students to apply for psychiatry.

His family hope to see this go from strength to strength. Instead of flowers they have asked for donations to be sent to the Aggrey Burke Fellowship fund.

RCPsych President, Dr Lade Smith CBE described Aggrey as “a giant in psychiatry who made a significant difference to lots of people’s lives without them even knowing.”

Dr Burke’s many contributions and achievements were recognised when he was presented with the College’s President’s Medal in 2020.

Members who wish to contribute to the Aggrey Burke Fellowship Fund run by the College can either make a cash donation if they are attending Aggrey’s funeral, or contribute via BACS to the College’s account, details are below:
