RCPsych response to the Health Committee’s Fourth Report of Session 2016-17, Suicide prevention: interim report - HC 300

Statement / comment
19 December 2016

We urge the Government to incorporate the recommendations from this report into its suicide strategy when it is published in the new year. Specialist Psychiatrists have an important role in suicide prevention, particularly those working on the front line A&E services. If there was liaison psychiatry service in every A&E department available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, it would significantly reduce the time it takes from assessment to the point of being seen and save lives - but we need the staff in order to achieve this.

Professor Sir Simon Wessely, President of the Royal College of Psychiatrists
