Specialty Specific Guidance for the new standard in CESR

The new standard for CESR will be fully implemented in line with the legislative changes being introduced on 30 November.

The updated Specialty Specific Guidance will enable potential applicants to self-identify the applicable pathway.

The new guidance offers a distinct move away from 'equivalence', a key feature of CESR, which will now be renamed the Portfolio route to Specialist Registration, acknowledging the two separate routes to Specialist Registration.

The new standard enables doctors to contribute all knowledge, skills and experience in their application including evidence which is older than five years – a new feature which should enable more applicants to take the Portfolio route to Specialist Registration.

It is also anticipated that these changes will make it easier for some doctors outside of the United Kingdom to work towards Specialist Registration, and we’re in discussions with regulatory bodies regarding reciprocal acknowledgment of experience to ensure that we maintain high standards expected of candidates applying for Specialist Registration via the Portfolio route.
