Access to study leave and study budget

The RCPsych Psychiatric Trainees’ Committee (PTC) organised a national psychiatric trainee survey to better understand the experience of trainees in accessing study leave and funding across the UK.

The PTC hoped to promote positive practice across the UK, to minimise disparities within training and improve trainee wellbeing, recruitment, and retention.

A significant proportion of trainees were not fully aware of important national and regional study leave guidance. In most questions, there was a significant variation of responses between Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland and within different regions in England. In some cases, there was also a variation in response percentage based on trainees’ characteristics such as being an International Medical Graduate (IMG).
