Dr Anil Ustun
Editor of the Registrar
I saw the role of The Registrar editor as an ideal opportunity to combine my skills and passions with the important work of the PRDC. My background as an amateur stand-up comedian and writer, along with completing creative writing courses and contributing to London-wide newsletters and publications, has made editing and publishing a natural fit for me. I am committed to making The Registrar a vibrant platform: one that sparks conversations, communicates what is happening across the College, and highlights the stories, aspirations, and achievements of resident doctors. I feel very privileged to take on this role.
I am particularly passionate about liaison psychiatry, where the interplay between physical and mental health is at the forefront of patient care. I value the collaborative nature of the subspecialty, working closely with colleagues from other medical disciplines and serving as an ambassador for psychiatry within the wider health system. More broadly, I am motivated by the ambition of helping doctors and the profession reach their full potential, even within the challenges of a stretched healthcare system.
There are several areas I would like to engage with residents doctors on. These include recruitment—ensuring psychiatry continues to attract the most motivated and talented doctors; access to psychotherapy training and its formal recognition as a qualification; and addressing the challenges posed by scope creep from other roles within the system. Central to all of these is the principle of advocating for high-quality, doctor-led patient care.
Outside of psychiatry, much of my time is devoted to creative writing and comedy. I also enjoy playing chess and spending time with friends and family.
