The Royal College of Psychiatrists Improving the lives of people with mental illness

Associate Dean for Trainee Support, Dr Subodh Dave

Dr Subodh Dave

I am delighted to be appointed the Associate Dean for Trainee Support.

A little about me

I have a dual clinical/teaching job – part-time Consultant Community Psychiatrist in Derby and part-time Clinical Teaching Fellow/Hon. Asso. Professor, University of Nottingham. I am also the Programme Lead for MMed (Psychiatry) at the University of Zambia.

Rationale for my post

The College seeks to ensure that its training initiatives are not discriminatory and that it is a leader of good practice in helping trainees that need support.

While my role is to help all trainees needing support, it is recognised that IMGs (International Medical Graduates) (who constitute >40% of doctors in psychiatry) have significantly poorer pass rates in MRCPsych written papers and the CASC examination. Evidence shows that early identification and remediation of training needs and issues is likely to improve outcomes for trainees needing support.

My Commitment

My commitment is to work closely with the Deaneries (LETBs), Psychiatric Trainees’ Committee (PTC), Staff and Associate Specialists’ (SAS) Committee and various Diaspora groups to ensure that:

  1. All trainees have an individualised training needs assessment that takes into account their specific context (for e.g. less than full time training, IMG status, disability etc.)
  2. All trainers/trainees have access to resource packs that enable them to access support structures to deal with training needs identified in the individualised learning plan
  3. Trainee support issues are on the agenda of every Head of School of Psychiatry with effective reporting and monitoring mechanisms to measure progress and to quality assure educational provision
  4. Create a mentorship programme for trainees needing support

Please get in touch

Helping every trainee realise their potential will need inputs from ALL Clinical and Educational Supervisors.

I will be chairing the Trainees’ Support Committee and within the next 3 months, we will draw up a time-lined list of outcomes reflecting the above commitments and these should be available on the College website. Please drop us a line on with your suggestions/comments.

My commitment is to ensure that that College - via the Faculties and the Schools - are fully involved in designing and delivering the interview process for both Core and Higher Training. Over the next few months, we will receive the report from the work Psychology Group, who have been commissioned to assess our selection criteria. I also look forward to integrating all the feedback we receive from interviewers into the next revision of the stations.
