Leaving a gift in your will

You can continue to support people with mental health issues after you have gone by leaving a legacy to the College. We know that your family and friends will be recognised first in your will but you can also include your favourite charities ensuring that your support lives on.

Making a will is the only way that you can ensure that your friends, family and charities receive what you want them to.

One example of a successful project funded by a legacy:

Dr Daniel Maughan’s story:

Dr Daniel MaughanI was appointed as the Royal College of Psychiatrists Sustainability Fellow in August 2013. This two year post is possible due to a legacy generously donated to the College. I feel incredibly privileged to have such an opportunity to contribute to psychiatry as a profession and to mental health services nationally through this fellowship which is, I believe, a real example of how providing time and space for a psychiatrist to study and work can bring significant development and improvements to mental health practice.

Sustainability in psychiatry is about ensuring we take a broad approach to understanding both the nature and impacts of mental health services. As constraints continue to increase we as a profession need to respond actively to ensure we can continue to provide high quality mental health care. This involves thinking innovatively about how we deliver care, ensuring that we provide high value interventions and that we prioritise the reduction of waste in the system.

In my work in promoting sustainability I have been involved in speaking to commissioners, the academy of medical royal colleges, Chief Executives and have presented at conferences. I am leading the development of a sustainability network of clinicians that will provide a context for sustainable improvement at a grass roots level. This fellowship is stretching me personally and giving me the skills and knowledge needed to lead change in my career.”
