The Royal College of Psychiatrists Improving the lives of people with mental illness

Foundation Doctors

Improve lives. Choose psychiatry.

After graduation you will spend 2 years working in a hospital as a Foundation Doctor. For information on applying to the Foundation Programme please visit the UK Foundation Programme Office (UKFPO) website

Foundation Programme Training will extend the knowledge and skills you have gained as a Medical Student and will help you become a competent doctor, delivering the best quality of care to patients. This is an extremely important time in your training, and it is during Foundation Training that you choose which area you would like to specialise in.

You will hopefully experience a psychiatry placement during your Foundation Training, and this will give you a great insight into what a career in psychiatry can offer. Even if you don’t have a placement there are many ways to gain experience in psychiatry; find out more about this, the sub-specialties within psychiatry and other useful information below.

The College has now developed a strategy to support the expansion of Psychiatry in the Foundation Programme which is led by Dr Ann Boyle. If you have any suggestions, please email
