Dr Rachid Bennegadi

Rachid Bennegadi, MD

I am a psychiatrist and anthropologist, with more than 35 years of experience in the paradigm of migration and mental health.

I introduced Clinical Medical Anthropology in France and put it into place in the Françoise Minkowska Institute, a medico-psycho-social Centre providing person-centred transcultural psychiatry healthcare, where I am the Director of the Research and Teaching Pole and the medical director.

This new approach to healthcare in France enabled us to improve psychological care by avoiding stigmatization and enhancing cultural competence. This approach differs from ethno psychiatry in that it is adapted to the French Healthcare System, which is Culture Blind.

I co-direct a University Diploma “Health, Care, Illness and Cultures” with the Paris V University René Descartes.

I co-direct an E-learning program with Professor J. Achotegui and the University of Barcelona.

My involvement in social psychiatry has lead me to take on the Presidency of the French Association for Social Psychiatry,

I teach at the Sigmund Freud University in Paris, which offers complete academic programs in Psychotherapy Science, as well as Psychotherapy Training at the introductory and advanced levels.

I am a Honorary professor of the Sigmund Freud University of Vienna.

I am an Honorary Member of the World Psychiatric Association (WPA).

Vice Chair of the French Mental Health League.

Former President of the Transcultural Psychiatry Section of the World Psychiatric Association.

President of the World Association of Social Psychiatry.

As former President of the Migration and Health Association, I worked on a research project on “Culture and Personality” at the Institute of Personality, Assessment and Research (IPAR) at University of California, Berkeley on a Fulbright Senior Grant.

In regards to my clinical experience, I am practicing in both public and private clinic, as psychiatrist and psychotherapist. I can prescribe medications when necessary, and can conduct psychotherapies, both systemic and brief. I have been working for 30 years, half of which has been spent at the Minkowska Center, CMP (medico-psychological center) in France. The other half of my time is spent practicing in my private office. In both settings, I conduct psychotherapy sessions in English, French and Arabic.
