National Autism Foundation Training Programme for Psychiatrists

Event Information

We are pleased to invite psychiatrists in community services in England to participate in a National Autism Foundation Training Programme.

It will equip psychiatrists to identify the possibility of autism in psychiatric settings and make a working diagnosis in straightforward cases. It will also enable them to formulate a personalised psychiatric support plan which incorporates reasonable adjustments to meet the needs of autistic people with significant co-occurring mental health problems.

The development and delivery of this programme has been funded by Health Education England (HEE) – attendance is free. Places will be awarded on a first come, first served basis.

The programme for the first cohort starts on 16 March 2023, with a day of interactive webinar-based training taking place from approximately 9am until 4pm.

To register for the course, delegates must be able to attend most sessions of the webinar on 16 March.

We want the Foundation programme to reach as many psychiatrists as possible and will deliver it remotely by digital learning to achieve this.

The first full day taking place on 16 March 2023 will be webinar-based and participative. The initial day is supported by an eLearning module that can be accessed whenever and wherever delegates want to learn.

The training is specifically designed to meet the needs of consultant psychiatrists, specialty doctors, and specialist trainees who work in a range of settings, such as:

  • Community mental health teams
  • In-patient services
  • Addiction services
  • Liaison and diversion services
  • Forensic services in the community
  • Other community teams

  • Recognition (considering autism as an explanation for the patient’s presentation, awareness of differing presentations in males and females, differing presentations of mental illness in autism, diagnostic overshadowing, and other neurodevelopmental conditions)
  • Referral (screening/ testing, awareness of local pathways for diagnosis, treatment and social care and associated support, etc)
  • Risk and capacity assessments, including consideration of vulnerability, and real-life capabilities
  • Devising reasonably adjusted and least restrictive treatment plans (differential responses to medication, therapies which need to be adjusted, accessible information, cross-agency working, due attention to those with lived experience, co-produced care plans, etc)
  • Resources (awareness of available literature and electronic resources).

Please read our terms and conditions before booking.
