Event Information
Overview
In this webinar, Dr Ayesha Ahmad will introduce the phenomenon of Solastalgia, a developing field of global health, defined as the emotional or existential distress caused by environmental change and land-rights issues: or, “the feeling of homesickness while you are still at home”.
Dr Ahmad will discuss different meanings of displacement, physical, psychological, as well as ancestral and intergenerational temporalities to contextualise land-based trauma in land-dependent and Indigenous communities.
Land Body Ecologies is an interdisciplinary network of artists, activists, mental health researchers, human rights activists, and expert communities from the United Kingdom, Thailand, Uganda, Kenya, India, and the Arctic Circle.
Narrative-based trauma expressions will be analysed from a transcultural psychiatry perspective to explore the role of traditional storytelling for mental well-being and healing. Dr Ahmad will conclude by illustrating the need for psychiatrists to be aware of land-based trauma in diaspora and refugee populations in the United Kingdom.
