Event Information

ADHD, neurodiversity and evolution: EPSIG trainee engagement workshop

  • What can we learn from human history about ADHD and autism?
  • Is ‘mental disorder’ the most helpful way to think about these diagnoses?
  • What might be the strengths of individuals with ADHD and autism?
  • How has the human environment shaped the evolution of different cognitive and personality traits?
  • How do these traits interact with our novel, modern environments?

Please join us on Friday 14 March 2025 9.30am – 5pm at the RCPsych in London for a day of talks and discussion sessions on neurodiversity and evolution, led by key figures and researchers in the field of evolutionary psychiatry, including: Professor Derek Tracy, Chief Medical Officer, South London and the Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust, Dr Annie Swanepoel, CAMHS Consultant, North East London Foundation Trust, Dr Adam Hunt, postdoctoral researcher, Leverhulme Centre for Human Evolutionary Studies, University of Cambridge, Dr Riadh Abed FRCPsych, Evolutionary Psychiatry Special Interest Group, Dr Paul St John-Smith FRCPsych, Evolutionary Psychiatry Special Interest Group.

No prior knowledge of evolutionary psychiatry is needed or expected!

Portfolio development opportunities on the day include:

  •  Trainee Research Forum – with the opportunity to take a role as part of a large trainee-led literature review project
  • National Teaching Programme initial working group – with the opportunity to contribute to the design and delivery of a national programme of teaching for clinicians on evolutionary perspectives of ADHD and neurodiversity

These sessions aim to provide an accessible and efficient way of getting those all-important portfolio competencies, and are likely to be particularly valuable to core trainees aiming to increase their higher training application score.

The event cost is £30, which includes all refreshments and a sandwich lunch. You should be able to claim this from your local study budget- a good use of anything left before it resets at the end of the financial year!

For anyone unable to access study budget for this event, a limited number of bursaries will be available to cover the ticket cost. Please contact sigs@rcpsych.ac.uk if you wish to apply for a bursary.

All training-grade or non-training grade doctors below the level of consultant are welcome to attend, as well as AHP trainees and students, and medical students.
