Making clinical audit data transparent

In his transparency and open data letter to Cabinet Ministers on 7 July 2011, the Prime Minister made a commitment to make clinical audit data available from the national audits within the National Clinical Audit and Patient Outcomes Programme. As part of this commitment, the results of hospitals that participated in the National Audit of Dementia have now been published. 

What information is being made available?

Casenote audit results, by participating hospitals in England, and in England & Wales. These data do not include any data about individual patients nor does it contain any patient identifiable information. 

Using and interpreting the data

The data presented in this file requires careful interpretation, and the information should not be looked at in isolation when assessing standards of care.

What does the data cover?

Casenote audit data submitted by individual hospitals in the National Audit of Dementia. The data were measured against a checklist of standards that relate to patients’ admission, assessment, care planning and delivery, and discharge.

General hospitals casenote audit

The data were first published in 2023 in the National Audit of Dementia Care in General Hospitals 2022-2023 Round 5 Audit Report. Data are provided at a hospital level and relate to patients with a dementia diagnosis or concerns about cognition, admitted to hospital for 24 hours or longer, between 19/09/2022 and 14/10/2022 (with some extensions to 03/01/2023).

Casenote audit data table

Annual Dementia Statement (ADS)

The data were first published on 10/08/2023. Data are provided at hospital level and relate to care provision and monitoring of the quality of care for people with dementia.

ADS data table

This data was first published in 2022 in the National Audit of Dementia Memory Assessment Services Spotlight Audit 2021. Data are provided at a hospital level and relate to patients that were the pathway to a dementia diagnosis between 01/01/2021 and 31/08/2021.

The data contained in this CSV file were first published in February 2020 in the ' Hospital Initiated prescription of psychotropic medication for behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia: Spotlight audit 2019'. Data are provided at a hospital level and relate to patients that had:

  • A diagnosis of dementia
  • Admitted to hospital for 24 hours or longer
  • Had at least one prescription of psychotropic medication
  • Discharged from hospital between 1 February and 30 April 2019.

The data were first published in 2019 in the National Audit of Dementia Care in General Hospitals 2018-2019: Round Four Audit Report. Data are provided at a hospital level and relate to patients that had a diagnosis of dementia, and were discharged from hospital between 01/04/2018 and 30/06/2018.

The data contained in this CSV file were first published in August 2018 in the Spotlight Audit 2017-2018 report 'Assessment of Delirium in Hospital for People with Dementia'. Data are provided at a hospital level and relate to patients that had a diagnosis or known history of dementia, and were discharged from hospital in April 2017.

The data contained in the CSV file were first published in July 2017 in the National Audit of Dementia Care in General Hospitals 2016-17, third Round of Audit Report.  Data are provided at a hospital level and relate to patients that had a diagnosis or known history of dementia, and were discharged from hospital between 01/04/2016 and 30/06/2017.
