Commenting on the announcement of new funding for the NHS, Professor Wendy Burn, president of the Royal College of Psychiatrists, said: “We welcome the Prime Minister’s commitment to prioritising investment in mental health care as part of a long-term financial settlement for the NHS.
“When she came to power, she promised to address the burning injustice of mental health patients not getting the care they needed.
"Mental health services have never been given the same support as the rest of the NHS. As a result, only one in three people with a mental illness are getting treatment. This gap can only be closed with significant additional funding over many years.
“We also need the Government to spell out its plans for social care, public mental health, training and capital funding, which all fall outside NHS England’s budget.
“Only by looking at the whole picture can the Government ensure that people with a mental illness get the care they deserve.”
