Royal College of Psychiatrists responds to BBC Panorama’s broadcast relating to the Edenfield Centre

Statement / comment
29 September 2022

The Royal College of Psychiatrists is alarmed by the disgraceful scenes on Panorama showing unacceptable behaviours towards vulnerable adults with a mental illness, by some care staff at the Edenfield Centre.

We absolutely deplore what we saw, it was inhumane and simply unacceptable. These patients have been failed by mental health services.

The most vulnerable in our society should be given the best care and their families should never have to worry about the safety of their loved ones.

We support the inquiries and investigations and call on service providers to demonstrate clear leadership in ensuring that all vulnerable patients are treated with dignity and respect, and receive high-quality, effective and safe care throughout their treatment and recovery.
