Antiquarian books

The collection

The College has an antiquarian book collection, some of which date back as far as the fifteenth century. Many of these books were donated to the Medico-Psychological Association before 1900.

The collection contains books on the history of psychiatry, psychology, mental illness and learning disability in English, French, German and Latin. Recently, we have also acquired what was once the Broadmoor Hospital medical library.

These collections can be accessed through the library catalogue, but they are only available to be viewed on site. Please contact the College Librarian at infoservices@rcpsych.ac.uk or 020 8618 4099 to arrange an appointment.

Adopt a book

As books age, many require expert conservation. To help preserve the history of psychiatry and keep our books in good condition for future generations, you can adopt a book.

When books are adopted we add a bookplate with the donor's details. Alternatively, bookplates can be dedicated to another person, perhaps in their memory or to mark a special occasion such as retirement.

You can adopt a book by getting in touch with the College Librarian at infoservices@rcpsych.ac.uk or 020 8618 4099.
