Our standards support services to improve the quality of care for people using services and demonstrate that they meet national requirements.

We know services are under increased pressure to demonstrate that they comply with national policies and guidelines and our standards incorporate national requirements and recommendations.

The standards are in line with:

  • Department of Health Policy Implementation Guides
  • NICE guidance recommendations by NHS Estates and the Royal College of Psychiatrists about ward design
  • Royal College of Psychiatrists' Guidelines
  • Recommendations arising from the National Audit of Schizophrenia

The 3rd edition of our standards was published in 2016.

We know that those who have the best understanding of the issues and challenges facing rehabilitation services, are those who have experience of working or being cared for in this these services.

We involve our members in the revision of standards and have representation from front-line staff, patients and carers in their development.

Type 1: failure to meet these standards could result in a significant threat to the safety, rights or dignity of service users and/or would breach the law (100% of standards must be met for a ward to be accredited)

Type 2: standards that an accredited ward would be expected to meet (80% of standards must be met for a ward to be accredited)

Type 3: standards that an excellent ward should meet or standards that are not the direct responsibility of the ward (60% of standards must be met for a ward to be accredited)

Our annual reports summarise findings from review visits conducted each year.
