RCPsych support for people affected by the natural disasters in Morocco and Libya

The countries of Morocco and Libya have been struck by devastating natural disasters leaving their communities grappling with the aftermath of a 6.8 magnitude earthquake, killing more than 2,900 people, in the vicinity of Marrakech.

In addition to flood waves measuring as high as 23 feet and a death toll exceeding 6,000 people, with 10,000 people still missing, near the city of Derna.

In response to these crises, the College would like to highlight resources available to those in need in Morocco and Libya as well as those worried for their loved ones from a distance.

When disasters of this magnitude occur, the RCPsych activates its emergency response plan in coordination with organisations like the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC). The DEC will initiate appeals to gather vital funds for relief efforts, which the College encourages individuals to contribute to. In cases where there is no active DEC appeal yet, donations can still be made to DEC member charities, who are actively engaged in providing assistance and support in disaster-affected regions.

The RCPsych's International Advisory Committee (IAC) is actively collaborating with national and international agencies to determine the practical support that the College can offer, such as working with partners to provide psychological first aid (PFA) training for those on the frontline.

For mental health professionals and caregivers working in disaster-stricken areas, the RCPsych has curated a comprehensive set of resources. These resources include eLearning modules, guidelines for mental health and psychosocial support, caregiver resources, and more. These tools aim to empower professionals with the knowledge and skills required to provide effective care in the face of adversity. Additionally, we understand that many will be watching these horrific scenes unfold from afar, concerned for their loved ones back home. We urge members to utilise the Psychiatrists’ Support Service (PSS) which provides free, rapid, high quality peer support by telephone to psychiatrists of all grades who are experiencing difficulties.

In the wake of these devastating disasters in Morocco and Libya, the Royal College of Psychiatrists stands in solidarity and will offer its resources and expertise to help these communities rebuild and heal. Through collective efforts of the international community and compassionate care, we hope to be a small piece in the puzzle towards recovery and resilience.
