State of the Nation" - Date TBC
This day is an opportunity for the retired (still working or
not) and resting to hear about the current state of the world of
psychiatry. There will be plenty of time for interaction and
discussion and we hope that this day will be both entertaining and
giving benefit of valuable clinical CPD points, and the pleasure of
social interaction with old and new friends. As always we have
reserved some time to discuss the current situation regarding
revalidation for the “orphaned” psychiatrist.
Guest speakers will include Doctors Keith
Dudleston, (Retired Consultant Psychiatrist and Lead SOAD
for the South West), Dominique Thompson, (Director
of the University of Bristol Students’ Health Service (2010 – 17),
currently Director of Buzz Consulting) and Joan
Rutherford, (Chief Medical Member of the Mental
help colleagues find a suitable peer group, and if you
have space in yours, it would be very helpful if you could
let Dr Rouncefield and Dr Divall know via Karen Morgan so that
we can put retired working doctors in touch with you.
For those doctors who are not in a peer group but would like to be
put in touch with one please forward your details
Morgan who will try and put you in touch with a group.
The South West Division put together four half day courses in
2014-16 specifically to meet the needs of retired or
resting psychiatrists and we will be running a number of
events again during 2017. We are aware that retired psychiatrists
can feel isolated and bewildered especially by the prospects of
revalidation. Many find jobs within organisations
that can help e.g. SOADs in the CQC, but others are with no
particular parent organisation. To give guidance and assist in the
“careers” of retired Dr Paul Divall and Dr Angela Rouncefield,
Leads for the events, hope to welcome you to these half
day events, which are open to any psychiatrist who has retired from
their substantive NHS post.
The topics will reflect what we believe to be the mainstream needs
of psychiatrists who continue to offer help and advice, or are
involved in activities such as Section 12 work. Each meeting will
include a short update on revalidation, especially to hear members’
experiences and to share good or helpful practice.
SWDT are always willing to consider any events that are relevant to
this group and any ideas can be forwarded to Karen Morgan for
