Professor Dinesh Bhugra CBE has been awarded the prestigious Yves Pelicier prize for his lifetime contribution to social psychiatry and championing the human rights of people with mental health disorders.

Professor Bhugra, who was RCPsych President during 2008-2011, said the award was especially important because it “reflects how social psychiatry can improve patients’ lives and outcomes”.

The award was created as a lasting legacy in honour of Seni Lewis, who tragically died in 2010 at Bethlem Royal Hospital, South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM) after being held in prolonged restraint.
